Lead-Free vs. Lead Safe

In New Jersey, dwellings can receive one of two lead paint certifications: “Lead-Free” or “Lead-Safe.”

Lead-Free Certification: This certification means that a property has been inspected by professionals using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technology and confirmed to be free of lead paint.

Lead-Safe Certification: This certification indicates that a property has passed a professional visual inspection and, if needed, a dust wipe test, ensuring there are no active lead paint hazards.
